Abstract: The foundation of a good psychological measurement, such as ability estimation, is to develop an optimal item bank for educational assessments. This research aimed to develop an optimal item bank for the further teacher training programme in Mathematics while detailing all the procedures, including planning, content analysis, and test blueprint going by Bloom's taxonomy of educational objectives. The pre-experimental research design using the one-shot case study type was adopted for the study and complemented by the feature data generation FDG technique. The technique was deployed through a post-hoc simulation using item parameter estimates with real data collected from 35 participants with 68 multiple-choice items, from which 200 items with 535 participants were generated. The developed item bank was validated for ability estimation using the item response theory model with three logistical parameters: item difficulty level, item discriminating power, and pseudo-guessing. The responses to the test resulted in the collection and analysis of dichotomous scored tests for answering the generated research questions. The item parameters and ability estimation were analyzed using the Xcalibre 4.2 programme. Ninety per cent of the items met the criteria of a good item, including having a good difficulty level and functioning properly between the high and low ability participants with the discrimination and guessing parameters. A relatively low Conditional Standard Error of Measurement was recorded as the indices for ascertaining the precision of ability estimation using the developed test based on which recommendations were made. The carefully outlined procedures also ensure replicability within other programmes.

Abstract: Soil organic carbon has played an essential role in global climate change, which controls CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a vital role in organic carbon cycling coastal saline soil as an integral component of the microbial community. The study is based on the combination of Laboratory and field experiments to research the changes in soil microbial biomass, soil organic carbon-related enzymes activity in coastal saline soil, the effect of Enteromorpha prolifera biochar on microbial activity, soil organic carbon-related enzymes activity structure, and diversity of AMF communities, the role of AMF in organic carbon decomposition in coastal saline soil. The findings of this study showed that Enteromorpha prolifera biochar could improve soil's physical structure and chemical properties, increase the amount of organic carbon in the soil and the content of carbon components, increase soil enzyme activity and microbial population, and enhance crop agronomic characteristics by raising water conductivity, mineral content, and yield. The combined treatment effect of biochar and AMF was the main tactical method to increase the overall strength of Elymus growth and organic carbon of coastal saline soil in the current study. It also had a negative impact due to the increased salinity level, which is a significant scientific issue and can be controlled by the treatment effect of AMF that promotes plant growth by promoting salt tolerance capacity and improves the stability of soil aggregates.

Abstract: The substantial contributions of the microbes inhabiting the rhizosphere are central to plant growth and crop production. The activities and functions of these microorganisms are vital for adequate nutrient cycling and maintenance of soil health, without which achieving significant crop production and sustainable agriculture are impossible. Understanding the microbial communities in the soil, particularly in the rhizosphere region, and the role they play in crop production can help to maximize their contribution to agricultural sustainability. Herein, the metabolic activities carried out by microbes in the rhizosphere and the importance of the three major microbial domains which resides in this region in acquiring nutrients for plant growth and health are reviewed. Furthermore, the importance and impact of root exudates and the effects of soil properties/nutrients such as soil pH, nitrate, phosphorus, potassium and moisture on the soil microbiome were discussed. This would help to understand how the rhizosphere microbial communities can be optimized for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe writing instruction and writing assessment beliefs and practices in Grade 6 English First Additional Language (EFAL), in the Intermediate Phase of the primary school, in the Eden and Karoo Education District of Western Cape, in South Africa. A purposive sample of 45 Grade 6 EFAL educators completed a 20-item questionnaire survey. Two of the teachers participated in classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, while a purposive sample of eight School Assessment Team members participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings suggested that, while there were differences between what the sample educators reported their beliefs and practices to be, the educators tried hard to practice according to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy as they believed in the potential of the policy for improving language teaching and learning outcomes. The respondents, however, also acknowledged such challenges as time allocation and educators’ workload as hindrances to desirable writing assessment and writing instruction practices. Among the conclusions reached in this study is that addressing assessment validity issues in EFAL teaching and learning be attended to through constant collaboration with school staff, the education districts and the Department of Basic Education so as to develop and improve quality and transparency in language assessment and instruction.

Abstract: The role of school gardens varies from place to place depending on the goal(s) pursued by the practitioners. Firstly, researchers have noted that school gardens are used as a strategy for improving food security. During the 1st World War, school gardens served as an important source of food in Europe and North America. Again, to date, school gardens are considered to have great potential of boosting food security in the developing countries experiencing hunger and malnutrition challenges. Secondly, the educational role has also been emphasised. School gardens serve as an outdoor classroom where learners are equipped with a variety of life skills including food production, teamwork, and good nutritional habits. Furthermore, experiential educationists acknowledge the positive impact that school gardens have on enhancing learning. In South Africa, the Department of Basic Education encourages schools to establish school gardens as part of the National School Nutritional Programme launched by the South African government in 1994 to alleviate food insecurity among learners from poor communities. Schools are also encouraged to use school gardens as educational sites. Nonetheless, to date minimal research has been conducted to examine the educational role of school gardens in South Africa. Thus, this paper reports on the outcomes of an empirical exploration of the use of school gardens as educational sites in the Chris Hani District, South Africa. The study adopted a mixed research approach and is underpinned by the experiential learning theory. A purposive sample of six primary schools drawn from the Chris Hani District was used. From the six schools, a total of 54 students, 18 teachers and 6 principals participated in the study. The fifty-four students responded to the survey questionnaire, while interviews were conducted to elicit qualitative data from 6 principals and 18 teachers. Descriptive statistics and the themes developed were used to analyse quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. The results revealed that school gardens were predominantly used as a food security enhancement mechanism. The study recommends the need to incorporate school gardening in the primary school curricula to boost the use of school gardens for educational purposes.\nKEYWORDS: School Garden, educational role, experiential learning, primary schools, Chris Hani District.

Abstract: While there is broad consensus about the relevance of open and distance learning (ODL) to the teaching and learning delivery in higher education, there is limited research about the challenges facing distance learning institutions, especially those with pre-service teacher training. South Africa is one of the countries in Africa with strong open and distance learning system, with thousands of individuals obtaining their teaching qualifications annually. As established in literature, the training of sufficient teaching manpower for the continent of Africa might require the building of one new university per week for the next twenty years, had open and distance learning system not discovered. However, this review identified many challenges in the ODL based pre-service teacher training, especially in the areas of learners’ support system, communication and feedback, school-based mentoring of student teachers, as well as meeting the needs of students that are living with disabilities. The paper recommends some measures for stakeholders to strengthen ODL based pre-service teacher training so that it meets the 21st century demand for quality teachers.

Abstract: International, 40% of males stand initiated, customarily aimed at spiritual reasons. In popular several African communities, man removal of foreskin is conceded, obtainable intended for traditional purposes, mainly by way of a circumcision custom and a ceremony of path for male hood. The process here raised towards by way of modern man initiation stands regularly accomplished in a non-medical situation through an old-fashioned supplier with no official remedial profession. Once conceded out as a ritual of passageway into male hood, old-style man circumcision is largely accomplished on youngsters (Lowane, N.E., 2021). Traditional benefactors will remain to be a significant basis of initiation for several men in in our country, Research will be based on initiation, whether on medical male circumcision or tradition male circumcision (MMC or TMC), being elimination completely portion of the penis flesh on the penis. The aforementioned may also stand accomplished medically or surgically at hospitals or on circumcision places. Circumcision colleges execute this practice by way of an old-fashioned ceremony of passageway starting childhood to men then it mentioned towards by means of old-style man initiation (TMC). Circumcision exercise takes active even in nowadays has been accomplished only intended for customary or spiritual order, nevertheless the aforementioned cannot at all extended remain regarded lone by way of circumcision. The aforementioned should, instead, likewise remain understood by means of degree towards control the extent of the (HIV/AIDS) disaster. A sum of research lessons institute that initiated males consumed slighter probabilities of constricting AID contamination matched through uninitiated males. According to Palmer, E., Marais, L. and Engelbrecht, M., (2022). ritual circumcision in our country has no impact on social, politics and other sectors of government. This article will to contribute significantly to the implementation of the South African TMCA in the province of EC for study research on traditional male circumcision. Firstly, finding researched work on the issue of TMC is very difficult because there is so much secrecy about this traditional practice to an extent that information is mostly found in newspapers (Mellor, D., 2021). The research done by the World Health Organisation (WHO n.d) examined the practice of TMC in SouthAfrica, Eastern Cape. However, while pointing to some policy issues, it did not address the policy implementation in relation to the Traditional Male Circumcision Policy itself. The main focus of the study is to gain better understanding of the implementation of traditional circumcision policy, the government intervention on the practice and creating synergy between medical, traditional male circumcision and the law governing circumcision.
