Abstract: Reflective practice is part and parcel of a teachers pedagogy. Pre-service teachers are required to observe and teach lessons at school during teaching practice (TP) and then reflect on those lessons. Additionally they are expected to design lesson plans for TP as well as their method lectures which include a component on reflective practice. We argue that pre-service teachers can benefit from a more explicitly defined content framework for reflective practice as well as the need to develop a community of practice to engage in meaningful critical reflection. This article reports the findings of a study on the reflective practice (RP) of pre-service technology teachers (PSTTs) at a specific university. Guided by Schons conceptual framework of moments of reflection the study sought to address the following research question: What is the nature of pre-service technology teachers reflective practice? In the study, PSTTs were taught by lecturers during the technology method two lectures (EDTE 301) on how to engage in reflective practice in order to identify critical episodes for several topics including the technology syllabus, significance of the topics in technology, students learning difficulties, teaching methods and assessment techniques during the teaching practice. The qualitative study was conducted among purposely selected PSTTs. Data were collected through an open ended questionnaire, journal reflections and lesson plans. The findings showed that the PSTTs reflected on general and pedagogical content knowledge issues in technology. Reflections centered on mere reporting on what occurred and lacked deeper level of analysis for improvement for the self or learners. The finding point to the need for teachers educators to engage in reflective practice and create more opportunities for PSTTs to engage in reflection. Key word: level, moment, pre-service teachers, reflective practice

Abstract: Teaching to enhance quality learning in large classes within South African Higher Education context Reddy Mike Megrove University of Zululand ReddyMM@unizulu.ac.za 1. Abstract The large class setting is a reality in the South African context as well as rest of the world, it is nothing new to both basic education as well as Higher Education environment. The situation in regards to large classes is not going to change and lecturers need to transform their mindsets and look for teaching strategies which will enable them to deal with these kinds of classroom context. Lecturers need to move away from the traditional way of lecturing if they want to cope with large classes. Lecturers who have large classes need to absorb and use different teaching strategies with the ones they are using presently so that they can overcome large class context. There are many challenges facing educators in when it comes to large classes. Challenges when it comes to large classes are experience by both the educator as well as the students. This paper is purely a desktop study. The aim of this study is to identify the challenges of large classes and the various teaching methods that could be implemented to overcome such challenges. The theoretical framework for this paper will be on cooperative learning and how it could be implemented when it comes to teaching large classes. There is ample research in the professional literature to support the use of cooperative learning in regards to teaching large classes. Abstract: Background: Adherence to adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) greatly increases the survival rate of patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. However, the reasons for nonadherence, as well as the associated factors, are not known. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the factors associating with intentional nonadherence are different from those associating with unintentional nonadherence. Methods: Two hundred ten patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer undergoing AET were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Adherence to AET was self-reported on the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) questionnaire, and each query was scored as either intentional or unintentional. Patients adhering to AET (n = 54, subgroup 1, control) had a MMAS-8 score of 8. By contrast, patients nonadhering to AET were categorized as unintentional (n = 62, subgroup 2), intentional (n = 9), or mixed-type (n = 85, subgroup 3). Information on sociodemographic and clinical variables, including AET beliefs and symptoms of menopause and depression, was also collected and compared among subgroups. Results: Nine variables were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis. An unfavorable balance in AET beliefs and mild or severe symptoms of depression were independent predictors of mixed-type nonadherence vs. adherence [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 5.89 (95% CI, 1.8019.25) and 4.30 (95% CI, 1.4113.09), respectively], but not of unintentional nonadherence vs. adherence (all P > 0.05). Age (<50 years old) was the only independent predictor of unintentional nonadherence vs. adherence [adjusted OR = 3.49 (95% CI, 1.0911.17)]. Conclusions: The factors associating with intentional nonadherence to AET are different from those associating with unintentional nonadherence. These findings can be applied to clinical protocols to improve adherence to AET by breast cancer patients.

Abstract: One of the major goals of developing countries is to build smart cities to avoid various types of congestions, accidents and many kinds of inordinate delays through advanced and intelligent Traffic Management Systems. An intelligent traffic management system can be conceived through many of individual sub-systems which include bio-sensing system, imaging system, messaging system, cognitive system, and visualization, remote sensing, and communication systems. Each of the sub-systems while is expected to work independently, they should also be in existence in unison along with other sub-systems. In a Traffic Management System, communication between heterogeneous systems which are situated either in local or remote locations have to be undertaken. Series of transformations are needed to move information from one location to other. Different kinds of communication protocols are to be used for effective communication and yet times require protocol conversions. Both local and remote communication has to be undertaken in an intermixed manner. It also becomes necessary to inter-mix Wi-Fi, optical, cellular methods of effecting communication. This paper presents a Hybrid architecture that meets all types of communicating requirements to implement an intelligent traffic system.

Abstract: Language teacher training programmes in Colleges of Education in Ghana do not emphasise the teaching of Linguistics. A situation which can be described as unfortunate because language teaching especially in multilingual settings frequently require answers to some fundamental questions such as: a) What pertains in a childs first language? b) How may that influence the teaching and learning of the current language? c) How many languages are represented in the current multilingual classroom? To respond to these questions effectively, the language teacher ought to demonstrate mastery in linguistic peculiarities underlying the formation and functioning of languages. The study refutes arguments advanced for the non-inclusion of linguistics in language teacher education and argues that a firm grounding in linguistic theory is imperative for effective language teaching, especially in multilingual classrooms.\\r\\nKey terms: English language teaching, teacher education, Linguistics and language teaching

Abstract: Aging is a process of life that cannot be denied, but if we can minimize functional decline during hospitalization and improve recovery of function, the elderly will be able to maintain wellness and well-being after discharge. To improve quality of life of the elderly, it is necessary to be able to quickly and easily identify possible concerns caused by aging and complex diseases and to prevent functional decline. The Geriatric Screening for Care-10 (GSC-10) was developed through systematic review, working group consensus, and geriatric expert’s peer review. It is an initial screening tool for health problems in the elderly, and has been developed to assess problems in 10 domains: cognitive impairment, depression and delirium, polypharmacy, functional decline, dysphagia, malnutrition, urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pain. The GSC-10 is not limited by who can conduct it (medical team, staff, caregiver, self-report), healthcare setting (acute, long-term, community-dwelling, or home care), or within-hospital setting (outpatient, inpatient, emergency department). The completed version of the Geriatric Screening for Care will be used as a basic tool for collecting patient health information and sharing it among fields of care in hospitals, and in inter-organizational collaborations for transitions in care.

THE DEICIDE OF CAN XUE AND GE FEI: THE SPECTER OF MAGIC IN CHINESE REALISM

Abstract: At the economic dawn of the Reform Era, China was to deal with a new literary avalanche: the Avant-garde. Narrative moves from socialist realism to abstract expressionism, from realism to experimental writing, forging a literary paradigm alternative to the dominant one. The shaping of postmodern texts depoliticized, fragmented, ahistorical, is somewhere along the line the negotiation of personal identities where the permanent struggle is not anymore between classes but within the frame of literature. In this sense, Can Xue and Ge Fei committed a deicide, killing off four decades of Maoist rhetoric and centuries of collective consciousness. My aim will be to demonstrate what makes the narrative of Can Xue and Ge Fei a moment of continuity and together a rapture with that of Latin American magic realism.

Abstract: Magic realism brings fantastic events into the frame of the narration. Yet it cannot quite be defined. At the very start of the process of definition, there is a question: magic realism is a mode of narration, or rather a post-colonial movement rising sociological issues alternative to the logic of power? The paper parallels and juxtaposes Latin American magic realism and the literary experience of Chinese literary Avant-garde in the 80s, similar apocalyptic thematic, but different narrative structures. Relating to the fictional universe of Can Xue and Yu Hua, the aim is to illuminate an exclusive mode to narrate history: far from being a negotiation of identities in a post-Weberian age, Chinese Avant-garde represents the implosion of Maoist discourse, thus the magic of realism is substituted with the horrifying abyss of a haunted fiction.

Abstract: Due to the unique setting of Maoism, Chinese postmodernism is to be considered no much the end of modernity as it is the beginning of it. Post-1989 narrative enters a theoretical discourse which leaves aside the former ideological imprint and moves within the frame of realism. Different degrees of realism, impressionist, absurd, in the case of the male narrative, expressionist, tragic, when it comes to the female narrative, anti-allegorical and surrealist in its extremes. The object of the present study is to observe the Bildungsroman of the male narrative, highlighted by another novel of education, that of French modern realism. Both of them grounded on historical forces whose agent is a Darwinian struggle for life.

Abstract: Chinese Twentieth-century has not been solved yet; however, the dynamics of the past forty years are too complex and contradictory to be wholehearted understood. It does not mean that China is beyond our understanding, it simply presumes we will have to isolate a framework of reality and inductively proceed towards the whole. That would be Chinese Postmodern literature. The object of the present study is to define the experience of Chinese Post New-Era, or post-Tiananmen production, from the viewpoint of Western modern realism and to lay off its part in the development of realism. On a common surface of decadence, nostalgia, at last, replaces Western needs for heroes.

Women of Realism: Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina and Wang Qiyao.

Abstract: Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina might belong to the genre of the novel of adultery and we could simply read them as a more or less vulgar story of a domestic betrayal within the range of the realistic novel. Running from desire for adventure to true love, adultery at first stands as liberation and after it has consumed its love parable, as guilt. Paralleling Wang Anyi’s Song of Everlasting Sorrows with Flaubert’s and Tolstoy’s work, we shall reconsider them as novels of disillusionment based on false fatalism and self-deception. This article suggests a theoretical arch linking up Western modern realism and Chinese postmodern realism into an a-historical dimension of desperation.

Abstract: Abstract\r\nIn mid-1980, the importance of knowledge as an asset in the organization were discussed. In 1980 came the development of knowledge management systems that uses existing work in artificial intelligence and intelligent systems led to new concepts as knowledge engineering, knowledge acquisition, knowledge-based systems supplied to the world.\r\nKnowledge management (KM) has been regarded as an important role as a sustainable competitive advantage in organizations in these years. Studies mentioned that KM implementation is very costly and time consuming. It also needs changes in the organizational culture and structure, which requires considerable advanced planning. Hence, organizations must be able to estimate the success of KM implementation before embarking on it. The existing methods suffer from deficiencies such as execution time inefficiency, lack of flexibility, and lack of ability to present several scenarios. This study presents an integrated intelligent algorithm for estimating the success of KM implementation. The algorithm has two basic modules which are artificial neural network (ANN) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). In other word, ANN model has been designed and trained using AHP that results in estimating the success of KM implementation in a large bank. This has led to fewer calculations, faster and more accurate decision making, less complexity, and ability to analyze a lot of scenarios with only one or a few evaluators while the effect of the subjective opinion of one single evaluator will be avoided. The implementation results show that this model is significantly valid for measuring the success of knowledge management. This is the first study that uses present an integrated intelligent algorithm for estimating the success of KM implementation.
