Abstract: Abstract Because the main purpose of education and training activities is to ensure that students behaviour is changed in a desired direction, the students themselves are considered to be the focus of such activities Therefore, it is important to assess to what extent behavioural changes occur and the main factors that influences students failure at school. The purpose of this study is to assess the potential causes of school failure in adolescents, how such failure can be prevented, and to guide the teachers and counsellors by assessing their views. The study uses qualitative methods of data collection. The Case Study, type of qualitative research was used to conduct the research. Research was organized according to the patterns of the Integrated Single Status, a type of Case Study. The population of the study consists of PDR educators and junior high school teachers. To conduct the interviews, homogeneous sampling methods were used. The sample of this research comprised four branch teachers and two guidance counsellors who work at Gzelyurt Kurtulu? Lisesi as well as one branch teacher and three guidance counsellors who work at ?ehit Turgut Ortaokulu. The teachers and guidance/psychological counsellors who work at two schools described the factors affecting the achievement of the teenage school students as family problems the students own problems and problems arising from the student's friends and social environment. Consequently, the principal causes of student failure were identified as having developmental disabilities, not understanding the correct method of studying, having low motivation, difficulty in adjusting to school, experiencing family problems, lack of effective communication with teachers, low motivation of their friends and deficiencies in their study habits. To prevent the academic failure of the students, the study determines that cooperation among the school, the family structure and the student was necessary. Abstract: ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to investigatee individuals risk-taking behaviors through different variables and examine the relation between personal charecteristics and perfectionism. A total of 301 students, 170 female and 131 male, between the ages of 15 and 20 participated in this research. For data collection, three data collection tools, Personal Information Form, The scale of ris-taking in adolescents, and The Scale of Perfectionism in Child and Adolescents were used. The data was analysed through t-test, ANOVA analysis and multi- regression analysis. The findings showed that the level of risk-taking behaviors in adolescents is highly related to their gender and marital status of their parents, but as to their after-school activities, there seemed no significant differences. The results aslo state that there is a significant statistical relation between socially-oriented and self-oriented perfectionism and risk-taking, in which perfectionism is an effective factor. Abstract: This paper reviews the importance of small scale fisheries in developing countries, highlighting the implications of climate variability on small scale fishing activities in the Kafue Flats of Zambia. Rainfall and temperature trends are analysed for five meteorological stations of the Kafue Flats, over a 30 year period (1982-2011) using Mann Kendall and Sens Estimator non-parametric tests. Over-all, the results reveal that the observed monthly rainfall over this period depicts increasing (< 0.05) and decreasing (<0.05 and < 0.1) trends. Trend analysis of seasonal temperatures also show increasing (< 0.05) and decreasing (< 0.01 and < 0.1) trends. Seasonal variability for both rainfall and temperature over the entire period displays statistically significant upward and downward trends at different rates. Household surveys, using snow-ball sampling technique, gauge the effects of climate variability on livelihoods. The study finds that climate variability and change clearly affects fisheries and their associated livelihood activities, and mounts pressure on food and income-generating assets in the Kafue flats. Notwithstanding, constrained by poverty and lacking alternative livelihoods, the fisher-folk remain reliant on the unstable fisheries. Devising adaptation and mitigation strategies, which reduce vulnerability, should be the primary option for sustaining the livelihoods of artisanal fishing communities in the Kafue Flats.

Abstract: The aim of our study was to assess the hospitalization periods of the patients who have undergone surgery with a diagnosis of cyst hydatid at our university hospital, as well as to assess the cost of this hospitalization per capita. The data of 213 patients, who had undergone surgery with the diagnosis of cyst hydatid between January 2001 – June 2014, at the university hospital, were retrospectively examined from the hospital information system. In order to ensure that all of the costs were of equal value, the costs were first converted into a Turkish Lira (TL) value in line with the June 2014 Consumer Price Index (CPI) as published by Turkish Statistical Institute and then into US Dollars. It was seen that 51.2% of the patients were female and 48.8% were male and that 10.3% were aged 18 or lower. The age median was 38 (Inter Quartile Rate (IQR) : 25-55) and the median of the number of days the patients were hospitalized was 12 (8-19). The cost per patient was 2158.25 US Dollars. It was seen that the cost of male patients was statistically significantly higher than those of female patients (p=0.040). A medium level correlation was determined between the number of days patients were hospitalized and their costs (r=0.533, p=0.0001). Hospital costs increased as the number of days in hospital increased. While there was no difference between the mean ages and hospitalization periods among the sex, the costs were found to be higher for men than for women.

HISTORICAL AND SYSTEMATIC CONSIDERATIONS REGARDING THE FOUR MOST BASIC PHILOSOPHICAL ASSERTIONS

Volume 73, Jun 2017
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.6.31

View Abstract   Hide Abstract   |   PDF Version
Abstract: One of the hall-marks of early Greek philosophy is that it commences with an awareness of certain basic aspects of reality. Reflecting on these aspects gave rise to recurrent issues, such as the problem of unity and diversity, the whole and its (cohering) parts as well as constancy and change – later on also captured in the opposition of being and becoming. Parmenides and his school characterized “being” mainly in spatial terms to which a metaphysical connotation is sometimes attached. Zeno, the Eleatic philosopher, best known for his paradoxes directed against multiplicity and motion, actually discovered the spatial whole-parts relation. Anaxagoras explored another significant insight in his claim that everything coheres with everything else. These developments paved the way for Aristotle to stipulate two criteria for continuity still reflected within contemporary set theory. What is noteworthy in this context is that the way in which Aristotle handled the problem of being and becoming caused him to restrict knowledge to conceptual knowledge, i.e., to knowledge constituted by universal features. According to this view of Aristotle what is individual withdraws itself from the grasp of conceptual knowledge. Then attention is given to some implications of the relationship between constancy and change, with particular reference to the nature of constant principles and the varying ways in which they could be applied in unique situations as well as to our awareness of identity. This analysis paves the way for an explanation of some analogical interconnections between different aspects. It also generated some crucial questions to the idea of a logic of change, followed by a concise assessment of the nature of monistic isms, specifically related to the aspects of number and space. In what then follows the distinction between concept and idea (conceptual knowledge and concept-transcending knowledge) is illuminated in order to substantiate the ultimate conclusion of the article regarding the four most basic “idea-statements” one can formulate about the universe. This is accomplished by showing that terms derived from number, space, movement and the physical aspects could be employed in a concept-transcending manner, expressed in the following four statements: (i) Everything is unique; (ii) Everything coheres with everything else (iii) Everything remains identical to itself; and (iv) Everything changes. One of the fascinating features of philosophical reflection is that the classical problems have a tendency to recur not only in philosophy but also within the various special sciences. That these problems are ultimately related to fundamental modes of explanation becomes apparent against the background of (early) Greek philosophy. Briefly analysing this legacy will enable us to highlight what arguably may be considered to be the four most basic statements a philosopher can formulate concerning reality.

Abstract: Over the past decade we have observed the advent of technological developments transforming the conventional understanding of the didactical situation in undergraduate courses. A group of lecturers at a South African University decided to create a digital environment for the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics. This was to address the difficulty students experience in mathematical proficiency. We explored the use of Moodle as a platform to achieve this aim. The various mechanisms situated on this platform are reported on. We show how a PC tablet was used during teaching and how the lecture notes are assimilated on the Moodle platform for student reference. Also online diagnostics for pre-calculus were designed and placed on the platform. Data showing student attempts of the various mathematics activities are analysed and discussed. The design and implementation of the online materials were based on an ontological model formulated by (Lora and Derina, 2004a). The findings of this study proved to have vital pedagogical implications and add to the theoretical ontological model.

RETHINKING KARL MARX’S ‘ARBEITSWERTTHEORIE’: A SEEMINGLY IDEALISTIC JUSTIFICATION FOR ‘HISTORISCHE MATERIALISMUS’

Volume 73, Jun 2017
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.6.42

Abstract: Majority of rigidly conservative fundamentalists of Marxism steadfastly maintain that spacetime has only one form completely objective: the natural spacetime. However, if stick to this point of view too harshly, we must acknowledge the exclusive materiality of labour and its products, so that ‘Arbeitswerttheorie’ (labour theory of value) cannot be well applied to evaluate multifarious kinds of immaterial labour bred by the variety of new economies fertilized by novel technologies. As a result, will close ‘Historische Materialismus’ (historical materialism). Therefore, the authors dedicate a seemingly idealistic justification for the backbone of Marxism by introducing an inventive notion—social spacetime, with which the conception of labour plus its relevant topics is briefly studied in order to reopen Marxism in the post-industrial era of globalization.
