Abstract: This paper provides the information about theoretical and experimental studies of the process of solid mineral water impurities coagulation at its mixing with aluminum sulfate coagulant solution in contact uniform bed layer with grain size of 10, 30 and 50 mm. It is shown that the values of velocity gradient and Camp-criterion, which together with coagulant dose determine the flocculation efficiency, are the functions of specific surface area ? of coarse-grained bed pore space. Experimental comparative assessment of the efficiency of coagulating natural water with kaolinite clay particles with volume concentration Co=(1,11-1,15).10-4 at its mixing with aluminum sulfate solution was carried out in two ways: by means of the mechanical mixer in free volume, as well as in coarse-grained bed layer by the clarification effect at subsequent settling of treated water.\r\n It is established that to achieve maximum clarification effect at ?>130 m-1 the required values of Camp-criterion in case of using coarse-grained bed are 1,5-3,9 times lower in comparison with mechanical mixing method. At that coagulant doses can be reduced by 1,2-2 times. It is shown that when specific surface area of coarse-grained bed pore space increases from 76,2 to 390 m-1 and time of water contact with coagulant in bed pore space increases, the effect of water clarification by settling becomes more significant.

EMPIRICAL STUDY ON THE APPLICABILITY OF REAL OPTION FRAMEWORK IN E-COMMERCE ADOPTION AMONG CANADIAN COMPANIES

Volume 73, May 2017
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.5.52

View Abstract   Hide Abstract   |   PDF Version
Abstract: Three basic observations are presented from the Canadian businesses’ adoption of e-commerce for the year of 2000 to 2007. Previous literatures indicated that firms who adopted e-commerce are not from sectors who traditionally are adopting e-commerce. As a way to explain this observation, the basic real option theory was used along with Benaroch (2002)’s framework for information technology risk management. The uncertainty factors associated with real option theory were analyzed. These factors, namely: risks specific to the firm, market risks and demand risks were statistically analyzed based on its relation to whether the firm has adopted e-commerce or not. Analyzing these risks lead to the development of three hypotheses namely: first; regarding the in-house competencies and its effect on adoption of e-commerce, second; rivalry within the industry and its adoption of e-commerce, and third; uncertainty of the market demand and its adoption of e-commerce. The NEBIC Model has been utilized to present the in-house technical competencies, while on the other hand, standard deviation is used as a measure of competition and market demand. To ascertain how the various risk factors affect the adoption decision, three statistical approaches were used, namely: Maximum Likelihood Estimation, Correlation Matrix and T-test of Means Equality. Using these three statistical tools, it was found out that the following factors affect in a positive way the resolve to do business with e-commerce. These factors were high in-house competencies to manage the technology, high level of rivalry within the industry and high level of variability of market demand. Finally, three flexibility-attaining activities were suggested: first; intensive in-house training on e-commerce technology, second; promotion of its e-commerce facility to its customers and third; advocacy of the use of e-commerce among industry members.

Abstract: In the 21st century, Islamic Studies are going through the process of reconfiguration of the research space and abandoning the traditional stereotypes inspired by the Orientalism of previous eras. The contemporary Muslim world is no longer confined to the Middle East; that is why the way to Muslim Studies, a new academic discipline, needs to be given. At least two new trends emerged within the last few decades that prompt this re-structuring. Firstly, it is an increase of the Muslim population in the countries of Western Europe and the United States that began in the middle of the previous century. This trend served as an impetus to the development of Muslim Minorities Studies showing that Muslims in the West are a very diverse group with a variety of problems. The second process that reformatted the field and geography of Islamic Studies was the founding of independent states in Central Asia. People there wanted to find a new cornerstone for their identity in the new context. The idea of religious affiliation, when Islam was rendered synonymous with tradition and a marker of national identity, became a new anchor. The paper suggests naming this discipline Post-Soviet Muslim Studies and presents the characteristics and further suggestions for a way forward.

SOCIAL INEQUALITY: RECENT TRENDS

Volume 73, May 2017

Abstract: The article analyses the main features of the social inequality in the modern world and their reflection in contemporary sociological theories. It claims that globalization has led to a fundamentally different kind of inequality. It has been proved that globalization causes serious changes in social and political spheres, which directly even if to different extents affect all humankind. Despite growing economic and cultural interdependence, the global social order is ruptured by rising inequality. Authors consider various types of inequality in the age of globalization. Their regional peculiarities are shown in the article. According to numerous recent sociological works the perspective of neo-capitalism seems to be the most adequate theoretical frame for studying globalized society and its inequality. Changing nature of labor and social inequality is a basis of justification of such theories. The article considers the main points of the “real utopias” concept developed by Wright as an alternative to capitalist organization of the modern world. Finally it reviews two reports of international organizations addressing issues of social inequality at a global scale. The article provides main characteristics of the social inequality in Russia, determines the peculiarities of inequality and data regarding involvement of the Russians into the global elite and middle class.

CONFIGURATION OF THE SELF-MYTHOLOGY AND IDENTITY OF FEMALE CHARACTERS IN PAUL AUSTERS IN THE COUNTRY OF LAST THINGS AND THE NEW YORK TRILOGY

Volume 73, May 2017

Abstract: The works of American novelist Paul Auster (1947- ) are uniquely concerned with the mythology of self, metanarrative and the role gender plays in these transactions. In his earliest works, The New York Trilogy (1985-1986) and In the Country of Last Things (1987), Auster uses genre conventions and styles (for the former, detective novels; for the latter, dystopian fiction) to interrogate these preconceptions of self-mythology and the role of gender within these genres, subverting tropes and traits of these works to comment upon them. In the following, we investigate these works in depth along these themes, conducting a close textual analysis from the framework of Freudian and Lacanian theories of psychoanalysis and poststructuralism. By investigating the roles of women in The New York Trilogy and In the Country of Last Things, we hope to illuminate Auster’s uniquely postmodernist, deconstructive approach to the psychological imperatives women are socialized into within American society, and how they are informed by narrative and mythology. The role of women, from the absent trophies of The New York Trilogy to the central voice of sanity of Anna in In the Country of Last Things, posits women as a societal superego whose goal it is to keep the destructive, nihilistic id-like impulses of men in check.

Abstract: In this qualitative study, the aim was to determine the self-perception of elderly people living in nursing homes, their opinions about old age, and their expectations of society. The study was a focus group study, conducted using a qualitative method. The study involved 30 elderly participants who were living in the nursing home. Three themes were created by the participants' expressions. The first theme is called "Meaning of Aging", the second one is called "Opinions and Attitudes towards Aging", and the third is called "Changes Experienced in Old Age". In our study, it was determined that the majority of the elderly people in the nursing home had a negative perception of aging. Living in a nursing home can lead to a greater sense of loneliness in the elderly. Making arrangements in the community to promote healthy and active aging is an important influence on the development of a positive perception of aging.

Abstract: Article is devoted to the comparative analysis of strategy of safety as private criminological theory, independent branch of the legislation and practice of their providing. Authors note that the modern paradigm of counteraction of crime is based on the main categories of the theory of crime prevention. At the same time the latest researches show withdrawal from the narrow "branch" approach determining safety from criminal threats only by forces of law-enforcement structures. Selecting the theory of criminological safety as the private theory of criminology, authors connect its specifics and the importance with features of the purpose, object and subject of studying, and also carry out differentiation of components of this concept. Authors analysed system of the operating "right of safety". Officially fixed concepts of safety, threats to security, objects of safety, types of safety are considered. In confirmation of the thesis that the central place among legal guarantees of ensuring strategy of safety is allocated to the criminal law, short stories of the existing Criminal Code of Kazakhstan of 2014 are noted. The conducted research allowed to reveal features of ensuring public and personal (sexual) security at the present stage of development of the Kazakhstan society, and also to determine the content of strategy of criminological safety.

Abstract: The paper shows that the concept of social protection must be considered through the theory of society cohesion. The purpose of study is to identify local and global general parameters and principles of the countries in the format of protection of the most vulnerable members of society – children and the old people. In the basis of social cohesion laid the welfare of the majority of citizens, harmonious and stable relationship between them, minimizing social exclusion and social disintegration. The authors have shown that a fair and effective legal aspect of the problem, with the ultimate objective of social protection is the key to sustainable and stable development of society. Instrument of the research of social protection of the population led to the conclusion that this system is too extensive and unsystematic. It was determined that representatives of major law schools define social protection differently. The authors show that the lack of funds made it impossible to assess at the proper level support to those who are forced to remain on the brink of poverty.

Abstract: We discuss the differential sequence based upon the equation ww" -2w'^ 2 = 0 in terms of symmetry and singularity analyses. We find that the coefficients of the leading-order terms and the resonances obey certain structural rules. When we analyse the generalised equation ww"-(1-c)w'^2= 0, we find that the symmetry properties of the generalised sequence are the same as for the original sequence and that the singularity properties are similar.

Abstract: This qualitative study explored the mathematical skills utilised in the design and construction of electronic systems by Technology Education pre-service teachers (n = 86). It addressed the notion of interdisciplinarity between Mathematics education, Physics education and Technology education. The study took place at a South African university and was guided by combined theories of constructivism and mathematics modelling. Written responses, designed artefacts, classroom activity observations and interviews contributed to the data. It was found that the pre-service teachers applied many arithmetic concepts unconsciously while they were designing their artefacts. Cumbersome use of terminology in Electronic Systems and misconceptions of concepts in Mathematics deviated confidence in their process of design and operation of the electronic systems.

Abstract: Small and medium enterprises sustainability and governance recently become a topical issue. Governance applicable to companies (corporate governance) had been questionable due to a plethora of scandals, ethics issues and corruption happening in companies. Therefore, applicability of corporate governance to small and medium enterprises like the minibus taxi industry has been questioned. These challenges caused the study to explore humanistic management philosophy in governance with specific reference to the Port Shepstone minibus taxi industry in KwaZulu -Natal, South Africa. Humanistic management philosophy was put forward as an alternative to economicism philosophy in governance. The study wanted to establish the extent to which humanistic management strategy, humanistic management leadership, humanistic management ethics and humanistic management culture affect governance of small and medium enterprises like the minibus taxi industry. These objectives were viewed using Ubuntu philosophy as a theoretical framework. The study adopted a concurrent triangulation mixed method approach advocated by post-positivists. A mixed method approach taps into the advantages of both qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather rich data which explained the phenomenon. The case study designed used enabled the study to do an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon on one industry (minibus taxis industry). The research methods used were questionnaires, observation and interviews to gather data. The data was gathered from minibus taxi operators. The integration of results from research methods generated a generalisation. The results revealed that humanistic management philosophy in governance of the minibus taxi industry was a challenge. The taxi operators, as owners of the business, were not implementing humanistic management leadership principles, humanistic management strategies, humanistic management ethics and humanistic management culture in governance. This affected their sustainability due to conflict with stakeholders. This contradicted the expectation of stakeholders who believe in African philosophy (Ubuntu). The governance of the small and medium enterprises like the minibus taxi industry was based on economicism philosophy instead of humanistic management philosophy. Therefore, the study recommended a humanistic management philosophy in governance model to guide small and medium enterprises in their business governance.

Abstract: This paper presents and applies a mono-and multi-objective approaches to improve the power quality and the reliability of electrical distribution systems using network reconfiguration. This study aims at finding a radial operating structure that improves the system reliability or/and minimizes the total cost of system power losses while taking into account a set of constraints. To handle the mono-criterion reconfiguration problem, a Genetic Algorithm (G.A) is applied. Subsequently, in the multi-objective issue with two conflicting criteria (total cost of power losses and total cost of energy not supplied). The pareto-optimality principle based trade-off is done using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGAII). For a load flow analysis in radial distribution system, a Backward/Forward sweep algorithm is carried out. To investigate their feasibility, these algorithms are tested on IEEE 10-Bus test system. All simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods successfully find the optimal configuration in a conspicuously short time.
