Multi-band PSS and AVR parameters optimization via a Genetic Algorithm technique to Improve Transient Stability of Multimachine Power System

Volume 73, Apr 2017
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.4.1

Abstract: With its three frequency bands structure, the new Multi Band Power System Stabilizer (MB-PSS) has recently been used with the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) in order to improve the power systems stability. Adjusting the parameters of these two regulators can play a significant role in improving damping any eventual electromechanical oscillations in power systems. The MB-PSS ensures a maximum damping, not only in local modes guaranteed by conventional regulators, but also in interregional mode. This paper introduced a new technique based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) that optimizes the AVR and MB-PSS parameters. A comparison based on simulation between the proposed approach GA (MB-PSS/AVR) and the controllers (AVR without MB-PSS, AVR with MB-PSS) was performed. The simulation results with the multimachine network nine-bus test system, known in the literature as Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC), show the efficiency of the proposed approach to damp oscillations and improve the power systems stability.

Abstract: The following article deals with the results of series of tests for a range of modified epoxy composites, which are intended to be used as protective coatings in corrosive environments. Corrosion of different nature presents itself as a cause of concern in numerous branches of industry. This fact calls for research to implement new types of protective construction materials. Epoxy resins have proven their resistance to chemically aggressive environments. To improve their technological properties further, numerous additives and plasticizers are being used. In this case, we use industrial waste to try and improve the properties of modified epoxy composite. Construction materials based upon epoxy binders are often being subjected to mechanical load cycles of dynamic nature. As such, impact strength of said materials needs to be brought into question. Technological properties of epoxy waste-filler based composites with high degree of filling have been researched. Among those properties the impact strength of composites is considered one of the most important ones. The samples have been exposed to different types of environment to determine the dynamics of change of key properties’ values. Regularities concerning the changes in impact strength values, depending upon environmental exposition and type of compositions, have been pointed out. Features of structural formation of impact-resistant material types have been evaluated.

Abstract: The article is devoted to problem of selection of the parameters for sections of concrete elements: beams, columns, carcasses. The calculation methodology is based on strain limitations in specified areas of the most intense sections of composite systems. The introduction of appropriate restrictions allows to determine, basing on conditions of the balance of power in a given section, one of the basic geometrical parameters of this section: height, width, cross-section of the working reinforcement or the maximum possible load. We are introducing the algorithm of solving the problem of selection of cross-sections of statically indeterminate system. This approach is proposed to be called the method of limited deformation (MLD). The method is illustrated by several examples. The method can be a reliable tool for the designing the reinforced concrete structures. As well as that, this method can solve the problem of selection of composite slabs sections.

View Abstract   Hide Abstract   |   PDF Version
Abstract: This article presents the movement of international reserves and balance of payments before and after the latest global financial crisis of 2008 and before and after the financial sanctions of foreign countries against the Russian Federation. It discusses that foreign investments were reduced due to financial sanctions of 2014-2016, and as the result, the international reserves were decreased significantly. To start the economic growth and to develop Russian economy, the investment potential of Russian economy should be increased by force of the activities with the other countries. These activities are based on credit transactions of Russian companies into foreign fixed assets and stimulation of import of fixed assets from other countries. One of the main options is to support the decision to fund in foreign Asian markets and to secure the assets together with foreign companies and investors. The key part of this article is based on the macroeconomic methodology of balance of payments and international reserves in the system of monetary and budget statistics, as these statistical indicators allow to analyze the relationship between the macro and micro levels and financial tools of macro regulation of the economy. The article focuses on how to manage the macroeconomic performance of the countrys activities with the help of social and economic tools; these tools are in conflict with the political tools, which often have a greater impact on the results of the country's macroeconomic performance. Based on Russian macroeconomic statistics of 2007-2016, it analyzes the main results of countrys transactions, and concludes that the political decision to limit the financial capital of the country adversely affected the results of foreign trade activities of Russia since the moment this decision was made. However, the article proves that these financial restrictions on the capital movements have a short-term impact on the economy, they are more of a political focus and these restrictions do not seriously affect the Russian economy in the long-term (these conclusions are based on an analysis of the Russian economy's performance in 2016). Moreover, the amount of official gold and foreign currency reserves is not sufficient to ensure the country's external financial solvency.

Abstract: Background: Community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus (CA-S. aureus) strains gaining antibiotic resistance cause major health problems worldwide. Emerging of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that are irresponsive to antibiotic treatments increased the prevalence of community- and hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infections. Most of invasive staphylococcal infections are related with the nasal carriage of Staphylococcus. It is emphasized that hand and nasal carriages as a reservoir play an important role in the spread of these strains, as well as the community-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infections. In this study, we have investigated the prevalence of nasal and hand carriages of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) especially MRSA among students who were enrolled in the university and the role of hand hygiene in the MRSA nasal carriage. The aims of this study are to overcome MRSA infections that are irresponsive to antimicrobial treatments by estimating the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA nasal and hand carriages in terms of population and to reveal the effect of hand hygiene in staphylococcal nasal carriage. Methods: Nasal and hand samples that were collected from left and right anterior nares and palms, finger tips and between fingers of student, respectively. These samples were cultured and identified by MRSA. Results: We have found that the prevalence of MRSA nasal and hand carriages were 0.73% (1/137) and 6.57% (9/137), respectively. It is also revealed that the prevalence of being both S. aureus nasal and hand carriers was 2.92% (4/137) (p<0.05). Conclusion: The development of Staphylococcal nasal carriage was seem to be related with the hand hygiene (p<0.05). Detecting the epidemiology and understanding the risk factors such as Staphylococcus aureus nasal and hand carriages are important to be aware of the invasive infections and the potential for MRSA and other Staphylococcal infections.

Abstract: Water pollution is one of the main environmental problems. One of the pollutants that become serious problem in aquatic ecosystems is heavy metal such as Cr(VI) that can be harmful to living organisms including human. Thus, the technology to solve Cr(VI) pollution is needed. One of the low cost and environmentally safe technologies to solve the problem is biosorption. The present study investigated the biosorption of Cr(VI) using rice straw waste. This substance is selected because easily available and relatively inexpensive. The result of this study showed that the rice straw waste had promising ability to adsorb Cr(VI). The optimum time of biosorption was 120 minute. The biosorption characteristics were fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption model. The result of this study suggested that the biosorption of Cr(VI) to rice straw waste occurred through physicochemical interactions in this case ion exchange mechanism and electrostatic interaction. According to the result of this study, the rice straw waste is prospective biosorbent to solve aquatic ecosystem pollutions especially heavy metal pollution such as Cr(VI) contamination

Abstract: While property ownership through sectional titles schemes has been in existence in South Africa since 1971, this multi-owned form of property ownership was not available in residential areas commonly known as the townships that were previously reserved for blacks by the then apartheid regime. Following the demise of apartheid regime in 1994, however, this form of property ownership is gradually transcending racial boundaries to become another form of property ownership available to township dwellers. Using a case study, this paper explores the experiences of the owners in the residential sectional titles properties that are situated in the townships. It argues that this form of property ownership is perceived positively until individuals have become owners and discovered that their development is actually governed by sets of rules that limits or control their behaviour and the manner in which their scheme should be managed.

Abstract: Purpose: This paper explores the daily operation of multi-owned residential properties, or sectional title in South Africa, which have become increasingly common in many Countries. Methodology: The research is based on empirical research into daily operation and management of the 4 case studies, based on participant observation, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Findings: The study revealed that, despite their popularity, sectional title properties might be marked by conflict which can affect the smooth and efficient operation of this type of property ownership. This paper suggests compulsory information disclosure prior to and during ownership in this type of development in order to mitigate conflict among owners and/residents and service providers, and compulsory training for the trustees, and on-going training for the ordinary members of the bodies corporate. Originality: The paper suggests how conflict in multi-owned properties can be mitigated and ensured that the ownership of this type of property can be protected.

Abstract: According to the Sectional Titles Act, 95 of 1986 (as amended) that governs multi-owned properties in South Africa, the management, control and administration of the residential sectional title properties will first rest with the developer who should pass it on to the body corporate as soon as the body corporate comes into existence in that particular scheme. The body corporate is in turn empowered by the Act to outsource some or all of its management responsibilities to its executive management, commonly known as the board of trustees. This paper therefore explores the daily management of these residential sectional titles schemes through a case study. The empirical study into day-to-day management of the schemes in question reveals that the trustees, once in power, do not only deny owners, collectively known as the body corporate, the right to participate in the management, control and administration of their scheme, but they also abuse the resources of the body corporate particularly its funds. In this regard co-management remains an academic exercise. Further, trustees failure and/or refusal to adhere to the restrictions or directions imposed on them by their body corporate often leads to the financial difficulties for the body corporate.

Abstract: The connection between a word and its meaning is not inherent but arbitrary. That is why there are different words to express the same concept in different languages. However, human beings show more or less similar behaviour, and perception characteristics in the face of many events, colours and shapes. In other words, cultural differences are not always valid in the presence of non-linguistic systems, which may be a word, a picture, a musical note, that is to say, a sign. There is no universal law that decides what is to be called what. It is merely a matter of convention because it is through cultural conventions that we conceptualise the images we receive. Visual signs may be considered as a form of common language, which is not limited or shaped by cultural differences. A visual is less subject to reading ability or to differences of language, and culture. Some signs and pictures such as traffic signs, signs on maps, garment labels have become internationally accepted by common usage. We can argue that the using of visual signs as a means of communication is a search by humanity for a common language and culture. In this article; the similarities of visual signs have been discussed. Cultural differences are not restricted in terms of easy comprehension of the visual language.

Abstract: Gastronomic tourism and its other varieties, including culinary tourism, has increasingly become the object of scientific research. However, there are a number of unresolved theoretical and methodological issues on these aspects of tourismology, to date. The notions of gastronomy, degustation, food, culinary and other types of tourism are systematized. We also reveal the methodology of state estimation and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of culinary tourism in Dagestan, and leading experts in the field of gastronomic tourism and practical cooking were invited to the republic for this. The expedition researches involve the condition assessment of gastronomic tourism in Dagestan in comparison with situations which are in Norway, Montenegro, Slovenia, China, Sweden, Croatia and Denmark now. The most striking objects and phenomena, related to culinary tourism in the country, are characterized. It is important to stress that some types of food industry tourism, despite the huge possibilities of development in Dagestan, lost prospects because of the religious situation in recent years. The study shows the design contours of the culinary tourism in the region. Dagestan still tags behind other countries in the development of culinary tourism. Therefore, the authors believe that fundamentally and in some non-standard steps to organize such tourism in the country will be useful. One of these steps is the combination of the gastronomic tours with the possibility of billet products for tourists' homes. The article outlines the main problems and future directions for the improvement of culinary tourism as part of the agro-tourist cluster of the Republic.

Abstract: The School Quality Measurement System (SIMCE) has statistically demonstrated that education delivered in our schools entails wide degrees of unequity related with their dependence, in other words whether they are Privates (with any contribution from the state), subsidized (with contributions from the State directly to a private owner) or Municipal (with contributions from the State directly to the Municipalities which administrate one or a group of schools considered from the state). Based on this reality, the main purpose of this research is to carry out a comparative study, in relation to students performance in the SIMCE test, by fourth graders of primary school in the area of San Antonio Municipality belonging to the Region of Valparaíso, in the central zone of Chile. This analysis has been performed considering the period 2002-2008, using 28 schools as a sample for further analysis. It will also try to correlate the obtained information from urban or rural area which paradoxically showed in a preliminary observation that these rural areas in conditions of poverty had the best academic performance. Finally this research is oriented to the analysis of the causes, it means the combination of inputs or process characteristics that make possible this achievement inversely of the low achievement in urban schools. From a methodological point of view the statistical tool SPSS was used in the development of this piece of work. This tool, as any program which perform statistical analysis, involves collecting the data in a file to be prossesed according the characteristics of the computing program. It analyzed series of data, giving as a result descriptive statistics of the scores obtained year by year. The researcher’s task in this case was fundamentally interpreting frequencies and statistics of central tendency. Data corresponding to a period of years of SIMCE performed in the San Antonio area were collected from the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Chile online database published for international academic and research community purposes.

Abstract: Democracy and publicity from World War II have been conjugated to place the political leader and the masses at a similar level, without belonging in the least to the same circle of cohabitation. From the monumental speeches of Hitler with its imposing scenes to be appreciated by the world and the residents of the German nation, they even inspired the Hollywood cinema, being able to appreciate it for example, in the film Star Wars, where we see imposing Parades of soldiers of the Empire and music to the best style of the superman. This publicity was no stranger to the exacerbate eye of the politician he saw in her, the perfect weapon to reach the masses. It does not take a Gustavo Le Bon to decipher the psychology of the crowds to realize that good publicity can change the thinking, feeling and working of the masses. That the professional politician knows very well and democracy begins to tremble before the scrupulous who always rise, to feel, wolf sniffing fear in their prey, the opportunity for their own interests and not the interests of those who claims to represent. Publicity and democracy are allies: However, this alliance will be useful for the common good of citizenship or for the common good of a person or a small group of people.

Abstract: After the Industrial Revolution, the fifth phase of human civilization i.e. the Age of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is emerging. In accordance with this advancement, the Islamic world has started looking at how Islamic religious education can be easily and effectively delivered via useful ICT applications such as websites, digital libraries and specific software packages to name a few. Technological advancement and communication and cyberspace have indeed given a new dimension to the study of hadith in a digital manner. In other words, it is also considered an effort to strengthen, uphold and preserve the texts of hadith in this era of prevalent use of digital devices. It seems that this study has identified three influential websites i.e. al - Durar al Saniyyah, Mawqi al-Islam as well as Islamweb that can be used to ease the takhrij al-hadith or simply defined as hadith extraction in the collections. Terminologically, takhrij is the science of hadith extraction and authentication; including validating the chains of transmitters by hadith scholars as well as grading the authenticity level of hadith. In other words, it refers to the process of tracking the hadiths in various collections. Thus, the study is in fact intended to demonstrate the ease of takhrij in the era of ICT and also to explore the websites of hadith which can facilitate learning processes. The methodology used was the quantitative data collection of hadiths on websites. On a positive note, the study found few takhrij facilities that have been refined on these websites including (1) Masdar al Hadith (original source text), (2) Ranking of hadith, (3) Sanad (chain of hadith narrators), (4) Matn (text of hadith), (5) The position of hadith in other sources by specifying Shawahid (witnesses) and Mutaba'at (follow-up), (6) Al-wa Jarh ta'dil (a systematic approach to critiquing a narrator's position as a narrator), (7) Categories of hadiths based on the Sanad and also (8) Hukm al-Hadith (derivation of hadith ruling). It is again to emphasize that all these takhrij facilities are provided in the three websites stated earlier. Above all, Islamweb is the best website that can be used by many researchers as it has been applying comprehensively the above-mentioned eight takhrij facilities.
