Abstract:
ABSTRACT
This paper provides an estimate of traffic accident rates on 18 different types of rural roads in South Africa for use in macroscopic analysis during early road planning. During the early stages of rural road planning, roads may be classified according to type (paved divided carriageway, paved undivided carriageway and gravel) and five topographic terrain types, namely flat terrain, winding horizontal road alignment with a flat profile, rolling terrain, rolling profile with a straight horizontal alignment, and mountainous terrain. Accident rates are expressed in number of accidents per 100 000 000 vehicle-kilometres. The mid-2016 unit cost per class of accident is provided. The following accident classes are identified: Fatal accidents, serious injury accidents, minor injury accidents and damage only accidents.
Keywords: Macroscopic analysis, road planning, rural roads, topography, traffic accidents
